About the Park

Dogs are welcome on the trails at this national monument in the high desert of eastern Oregon, off OR-19 near Kimberly and Mitchell. More than 10 miles of pet-friendly paths wind past the colorful, banded hills and fossil-rich formations the monument is known for. The park runs a B.A.R.K. Ranger program, which lays out simple rules for visiting responsibly with a leashed dog. This is unfenced backcountry terrain, so keep your dog leashed and carry water, especially in summer when the exposed hills get hot. Admission is free. Visitor facilities are open Monday and Thursday through Sunday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Check the National Park Service site for trail and pet guidelines before you go.

infoWhat to Know Before You Go

Walking trails are available, so you and your dog can enjoy a walk beyond just the off-leash area. Trails are a great option for dogs who enjoy sniffing and exploring at their own pace.

Best of all, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is completely free to visit — no membership or daily fees required.

backpackWhat to Bring

check_circle

Fresh water and a bowl

Even parks with water fountains can have them out of service. Bring your own to be safe.

check_circle

If you visit near dusk, visibility gear helps you keep track of your dog and stay safe.

High-value treats

Useful for practicing recall in a distracting environment and rewarding good social behavior.

Your dog's favorite toy

A familiar toy can help shy dogs feel more comfortable and give them something to focus on.
