About the Park

Beach access makes Cape Lookout State Park a favorite for dog owners on the north Oregon coast, on Whiskey Creek Road southwest of Tillamook. Leashed dogs are welcome on the sand and along the park's hiking trails, and the campground offers pet-friendly yurts and cabins for overnight stays. The surface is largely sand near the shore. This is an unfenced state park, so dogs stay on leash as required. It is free for day use and open daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Coastal weather is cool and often wet, and sneaker waves and cold surf are real hazards, so keep dogs close to the water. Check the Oregon State Parks page for camping reservations and current pet rules before you go.

infoWhat to Know Before You Go

Walking trails are available, so you and your dog can enjoy a walk beyond just the off-leash area. Trails are a great option for dogs who enjoy sniffing and exploring at their own pace.

Best of all, Cape Lookout State Park is completely free to visit — no membership or daily fees required.

backpackWhat to Bring

check_circle

Fresh water and a bowl

Even parks with water fountains can have them out of service. Bring your own to be safe.

check_circle

Poop bags

Most parks provide them, but don't rely on it. Always come prepared to clean up after your dog.

check_circle

A folding chair

This park may have limited seating, so a portable chair can make longer visits more comfortable.

check_circle

A reflective collar or light-up leash

If you visit near dusk, visibility gear helps you keep track of your dog and stay safe.

check_circle

High-value treats

Useful for practicing recall in a distracting environment and rewarding good social behavior.

check_circle

Your dog's favorite toy

A familiar toy can help shy dogs feel more comfortable and give them something to focus on.
